Know Your Rights in Care Project | Exploring Privacy

Over the Easter break, a group of young people from EPIC’s under 18 Care Community came together in Limerick for the second workshop in our Know Your Rights in Care project. This project, funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY), will support children and young people in care to explore their rights and find creative ways to express them.
At this session, the young people identified the right to privacy and the importance of personal boundaries as key areas they wanted to focus on. This led to open and thoughtful discussions, where participants reflected on their own experiences and what privacy means to young people in care.
The workshops are grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which is an international agreement that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of all children. It recognises children as individuals with their own rights and protects their well-being, development, and participation in society. Some of its key principles include the right to be treated fairly, the right to have their best interests put first, and the right to have their views heard and taken seriously in matters affecting them. These rights apply to all children.

Led by our Creative Lead, Dani Gill, the project engages young people to reflect on their rights through artistic mediums. In this workshop, participants got hands-on by creating collages and taking part in a world-building activity. The space was designed to encourage creativity and meaningful participation – and of course, there was time for some well-deserved pizza and chats!
This was the second in a series of workshops that will continue to support young people in care to build their knowledge of their rights, express their views, and contribute to a wider awareness-raising campaign for children in care.
